Joshua is our 12 year old nephew. Almost everyone calls his Josh. He moved in with us in June 2000. He will also be entering the 7th grade this August. He and Brittany go to the same school. One thing that stands out the most when I think of Josh is "Raiders fan." That child lives, eats and breathes Oakland Raiders.
A month has passed since the last entry and Josh seems to be settling into school better. He received his report card Friday and his lowest grade was an 80. When I told him that, his face just beamed and he wanted to call everyone he knew, right then. His English teacher has commented on how impressed she is with Josh's progress in his writing. Hopefully that will help him since 7th grade has to take the writing portion of the TAKS test.
Josh did get into his first fight. Some 8th grade boy in his P.E. class was bothering him and Josh tried to take a rational approach to get out of the situation. Unfortunately, it resulted in the boy hitting Josh and knocking the wind out of him and Josh hit back. I wasn't thrilled that there was a physical altercation, but I was glad to see Josh defend himself because I don't want to see anyone walk all over him. Josh's Raiders are not doing very well. Fortunately, the Raiders games aren't televised very often so at least Josh can't watch them and get annoyed. He does, however, follow a play-by-play on NFL.com during the game.Josh isn't interested in any of the current extra curricular activities through the school right now, but he is looking forward to track season. He likes playing basketball in the backyard, but he isn't really interested in the game as a team sport. He's been enjoying his P.E. class because it's more of a weightlifting class and he seems to like working with the different weights. I know Josh wants to start going up to the high school track to work on running, so we'll probably be starting that soon.
School started and Josh seems to be enjoying 7th grade so far. The football season for the NFL has started, so Josh is back in football mode, driving everyone crazy talking about the Raiders.
Well, Josh ran in another track meet last weekend. He ran in the 100m, 200m and 400m. In both the shorter distances, he finished in 4th place and earned ribbons for both events. In the 400m, he finished 2nd, an improvement over his last race. Josh has another meet tomorrow and I think he's excited about getting ready to run. I'm not sure what the next weekend will look like (it is regionals, I believe), so we'll have to see what it is store.
Josh is participating in two different things this summer. Our city has a summer track program that runs from May through July. Josh has been going to practices for that, but due to different schedule conflicts, had missed two track meets. He ran yesterday in the 400m and finished 3rd. He was so proud of himself! He's also doing a five-week course that helps an athlete build speed, endurance and strength while emphasizing character and nutrition. I thought it would be a good thing for Josh to do so he wouldn't get so bored throughout the summer, plus it would get him in shape for football. He's planning on trying out for a city-based team that competes throughout the area.
Today is the first day of Josh's re-designed page. It's been a busy few months since the last family updates were put up. Josh entered and completed 6th grade, which is middle school here. He did really well. He was nervous about his coursework but he seems to have come through with flying colors. He received his last report card a few weeks ago and got a yearly average of at least an 80 in all his classes.
Josh seems to make friends pretty easy. He can be kind of quiet. OK, let me amend that by saying he can be quiet around people he doesn't know well. But he seems to fit in well at school and he has commented that he likes middle school a lot more than elementary.
For Josh's birthday, we redecorated his room in Raiders paraphernalia. He has a new comforter, wall hanging, border and posters. The border was a pain to put up and being the obsessive child he is, he made sure we did it right. Overally, the room turned out pretty nice. The dressers that both he and Brittany got when they were around 5-6 are still in great shape and have these neat little inserts for the drawer fronts that basically allows you to change the color based on the rest of the room. Since most of his stuff was red before, we were able to change to black...which I'm sure Josh liked a great deal.

Josh has a little sister named Sydney and two brothers, Jonathan and Zachery.

He had his ear pierced when he was in elementary school. The school district here does not allow boys to have piercings so he had to remove the earring. He went ahead and let the hole close.

Josh has been learning how to fly radio control airplanes. Steve has been working with him off and on to teach him the hobby. Josh seems to do well in it.

He is probably the biggest helper around the house. He cooks most of his meals, does the dishwasher, washes his own clothes and is working on learning to mow the lawn. Although everyone is expected to do certain chores, Josh is the most consistent with them (although I'm sure most of it is motivated by him wanting an allowance).
