What is Independence Day? For many it's a day for parties, drinking and getting a day off of work. What it should be, ideally, is a day when we acknowledge the day of this nation's independence. It should be a day when we recognize all the men and women who have served this country to fight for and protect it. It should be a day when we give thanks for all the things the citizens of this nation are entitled to...the right to vote, for one, and many other rights that many countries do not have.
My grandfather received a Purple Heart in World War II because he was injured while fighting for his country. My father fought a war in Vietnam and then had to come back to a country where many veterans were spat upon or cursed at for doing their job. My husband served in the military for 5 years, knowing that at any time, he could be sent to some remote location to fight for the country he believes in.
Yes, I enjoy the "break" we get on the 4th of July, but more than that, I appreciate the effort so many have given to protect this country and its rights and I have gratitude and respect to all the families that have had to watch their loved ones go off to battle.
Thank you
